OJS Development Pricing
OJS Development Pricing
OJS development is quoted per project based on feature complexity and the current state of your installation. We don't publish flat per-feature prices because a "simple" request can turn complex depending on your existing customizations — every quote follows a look at your actual setup.
Essential
Small, well-defined changes
Best for
A single workflow tweak, small settings change, or minor bug fix in existing custom code.
- Single-feature scope
- Staging validation before deployment
- Basic change documentation
Professional
Custom features or plugins
Best for
A custom plugin, theme customization, or multi-step workflow change.
- Written technical specification
- Staging build & review cycle
- Source code + documentation handover
Institutional
Multi-journal or complex integration work
Best for
Publishers needing consistent development across multiple journals, or complex third-party integrations.
- Cross-journal consistency review
- Phased delivery plan
- Ongoing maintenance option for delivered code
Exact cost depends on your journal's specific scope. Every tier above results in a written quote — not an automatic charge.
What's Typically Included
- Written scope before billable work begins
- Development on staging, not production
- Basic documentation of what was built
What's Typically Excluded
- Hosting or server administration (see OJS Hosting)
- Content writing or editorial policy decisions
- Ongoing maintenance of delivered code, unless separately arranged
What Affects Cost
- Number and complexity of features requested
- Whether existing custom code needs review or rework first
- Whether third-party API integration is involved
- Turnaround timeline requested
Response-Time Definitions
Development project quotes are typically returned within a few business days of a scoping conversation. Ongoing support response times are defined separately under OJS Support pricing.
Upgrade Policy
Custom development delivered under this pricing does not automatically include future OJS version compatibility work — that's scoped separately under OJS Upgrade when needed.
Data Ownership
You own the source code and content delivered under a development engagement. We don't hold your code or data hostage behind a license.
Cancellation Policy
Projects can be paused or cancelled before completion; you're billed for work completed to that point, per the terms agreed in your written scope.
