OJS Upgrade & Migration Pricing

OJS Upgrade & Migration Pricing

Upgrade and migration pricing always follows a compatibility audit or source-system assessment first — we do not publish fixed prices for this category because the actual cost depends entirely on how many custom themes/plugins need review, and how cleanly your existing data maps to OJS. An unscoped fixed price would be a guess, not a quote.

Exact cost depends on your journal's specific scope. Every tier above results in a written quote — not an automatic charge.

What's Typically Included

  • A written assessment before any fixed quote is given
  • Staging environment work before production is touched
  • Post-project validation against a checklist

What's Typically Excluded

  • Unscoped, guessed fixed pricing — we don't offer this for upgrades/migrations
  • Ongoing maintenance after the project (see OJS Maintenance)
  • New feature development beyond restoring existing functionality (scoped separately)

What Affects Cost

  • Number of custom themes/plugins needing compatibility review
  • How cleanly your source system's data maps to OJS (for migrations)
  • Size of the archive being upgraded or migrated
  • Whether DOIs need to be re-pointed as part of the work

Response-Time Definitions

Assessment requests are typically scheduled within a few business days. Emergency situations (e.g. an unsupported version with an active security concern) can be prioritized — say so when you reach out.

Upgrade Policy

This is itself the service that handles upgrades — see our OJS Upgrade and OJS Migration service pages for what's included in the project methodology.

Data Ownership

Your content, metadata, and code remain yours throughout and after the project. We provide a full backup before any change as standard practice.

Cancellation Policy

The assessment itself can be a standalone paid or free engagement depending on scope — see our Refund & Cancellation Policy for project-stage cancellation terms.

Pricing Questions

Because upgrade and migration risk varies enormously based on your specific themes, plugins, and data — a number given without looking at your installation is a guess, and we don't think that's a responsible way to quote this kind of work.

This depends on project scale — a straightforward single-journal assessment is often free; a very large multi-journal assessment may carry a fee, which we'll tell you upfront before you commit to anything.

Significantly more accurate than any pre-assessment guess, since it's based on your actual installation. Some risk always remains with legacy systems, which is why we build in a validation and rollback step.

You'll see that in the written findings and quote before committing to anything — there's no obligation to proceed once you've seen the assessment.
